Here are some of the causes of vision loss that may lead you to get in-home care for your elderly loved ones who are blind or visually impaired.
Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss in people over 50 and comes in two forms, Dry and Wet. AMD is vision loss that occurs in the center of the eye(s). This can cause blurred vision, straight lines to look wavy and the need for more light.
Glaucoma
The leading cause of blindness in the United States. It is caused by optic nerve damage and is typically associated with high eye pressure. The progressive loss of peripheral (side) vision. This can cause difficulty driving at night and loss of contrast.
Cataracts
These cause clouding in the lens of the eyes. The clouding can cause hazy vision, difficulty driving at night, double vision, difficulty distinguishing colors and sensitivity to glare.
Diabetic Retinopathy
People with diabetes can develop diabetic retinopathy. It is caused by leaky blood vessels and affects central and peripheral vision and causes blurry or changing vision, trouble reading and floaters in one’s eyes.
Although these causes may not seem detrimental to your loved one’s vision at first, as they get older, these causes can get worse and cause blindness in your loved one. And as their vision loss progresses, their ability to live independently and safely becomes diminished. This is why A to Z Home Care offers care home for the elderly blind to ensure they are safe and can live a good quality life as they get older.
